Blackpool’s famous beach donkeys have had their annual “MOT” to ensure they are fit and healthy for the summer season.
Vet John Gilliver – along with his colleagues from Gillivervet in Chorley, Lancashire – conducted health checks on more than 40 of the equines at the seaside resort’s South Central car park ahead of the summer season, which will see the animals give children rides across the sand.
Full check
As well as checking the condition of their feet, teeth and general well-being, the donkeys were wormed and vaccinated, and their backs checked to make sure their tack wasn’t rubbing or causing discomfort.
The veterinary checks were carried out in association with Blackpool Council, which provides licences for the donkeys operating on the beach.
‘Huge admiration’
Mr Gilliver said: “The health and welfare of the donkeys are a key priority, and we ensure they are fit, healthy and happy before they begin the summer season.
“They are wonderful animals and I have a huge admiration for donkeys, so, as a practice, we were happy to assist Blackpool Council.”
Confident
Blackpool Council licensing officer Ryan Ratcliffe said: “All beach donkeys have an annual ‘MOT’ before the summer season, so we are confident they are in the best of health for taking young children for rides.
“Gillivervet has been really helpful in doing the health checks and making sure the donkeys are fit for work and in good health.”
