New RCVS president calls for profession to embrace diversity

Niall Connell, pictured with past-president Amanda Boag, has pledged to increase diversity in the profession.

The new president of the RCVS has vowed to do everything he can to break down barriers and increase diversity in the profession.

At a time when the profession is facing unprecedented calls to broaden access to people from different ethnic minorities and socioeconomic backgrounds, Niall Connell has pledged to help make that happen.

During his inaugural speech at RCVS Royal College Day, Dr Connell voiced a desire to build bridges and improve access during his year in office – and urged colleagues to help.

Hot topics

His vision has come at a time when equality and diversity issues are becoming increasingly hot topics in the profession.

In May, Ewan Cameron, head of the University of Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine, said he was “ashamed” at the lack of diversity in the profession and that more needed to be done.

Last month, the British Veterinary LGBT+ group reported an “unprecedented representation” from its members at London Pride, while a BVA survey has found 24 per cent of working vets and veterinary students have experienced or witnessed discrimination in the past year, leading to the launch of a “big conversation” on the issue.
