Authorised flunixin stocks available in UK

Stocks of flunixin for use in non-food horses have become available in the UK – with assurances from the VMD that measures are in place to address a supply shortage should it arise.

The labelling of Meflosyl 5% Solution for Injection (Vm 42058/4085) has been changed to restrict its use to horses not destined for the food chain.

Diethanolamine suspension

Last year, the VMD suspended the use of products containing the excipient diethanolamine – including flunixin – in response to human health fears from EU scientists.

However, the restrictions were relaxed to allow the use of flunixin in non-food-producing horses, provided it was accompanied by a “caution in use” letter, after concerns were raised by BEVA about the suspension of the “gold standard” painkiller.

Last week, the VMD announced Meflosyl was now available on the UK market for non-food horses, but has since become aware of vets’ concerns that demand may still exceed supply.

Options

A VMD statement released today (30 July) said: “While purchase of an authorised medicinal product should be the vets’ first choice, the VMD has a number of options to address availability issues, should they arise.

“Stocks of flunixin solution for injection that were made available last year accompanied by a ‘caution in use’ letter remain at wholesalers and the VMD will permit release of these in the event a UK-authorised product becomes unavailable (with a ‘caution in use’ letter as previously permitted).

“Vets may also consider applying to import an alternative product via the Special Import Scheme if a supply issue is identified.”

Cascade

The statement added: “Vets are reminded that use of the cascade must be based on clinical need. Where authorised products are temporarily unavailable, vets should consider the likely quantities needed and purchase appropriately. The VMD is working with wholesalers to monitor availability.

“As before, any existing product held at the veterinary level can continue to be used.”
